International Women's Day
‘The menace is the woman who thinks she ought to be flying in a high-speed bomber when she really has not the intelligence to scrub the floor of the hospital properly.’
This quote, written by the editor of the Aeroplane magazine published in 1941, was a common opinion regarding women in the ATA – the Air Transport Auxiliary. Unfortunately, such attitudes were not reserved only for this section of women, but most of those who participated during the second world war. Yet their skills, dedication, humour and courage in the face of adversity both home and abroad, helped secure the freedom we enjoy today.
